America kills UN resolution on Yassin

March 26, 2004 09:15 IST

The United States has vetoed a United Nations Security Council resolution condemning Israel for the assassination of Sheikh Ahmed Yassin, founder of the Palestinian militant group Hamas.

The resolution on Thursday evening got 11 votes with three abstentions in the 15-member council. But the negative vote by the US killed the resolution.

Algeria, which sponsored the resolution, said it seemed the Security Council was "doomed to fail" when dealing with West Asia issues.

The resolution condemned "the most recent extra-judicial execution committed by Israel".
