A top United Liberation Front of Assam leader close to the outfit's commander-in-chief Paresh Barua was arrested from a jungle at Buxirhat in Toofanganj subdivision of West Bengal's Cooch Behar district, a senior police official said on Thursday.
Mozammel Haque alias Nazrul Ali, ULFA's cultural secretary was arrested on a tip off as he was about to cross over to to Kamakhyaguri in Jalpaiguri district, adjoining Assam's Kokrajhar district on Wednesday, Additional SP S Bhattacharya told PTI over phone from Coohbehar.
Haque, wanted in several cases in Assam and North Bengal was also in-charge of the outfit's foreign affairs department, the police official said.
Haque, who was unarmed, did not put up any resistance.
Cooch Behar police superintendent, Jagmohan, said Haque was a resident of Golokganj of Golokganj in Assam's Dhubri district and had joined the ULFA in 1989. He was given charge of the outfit's cultural wing in 1993.
Inspector general of police K L Meena has gone to Buxirhat to interrogate him. The Assam police have also been informed, Jagmohan added.
