ULFA threatens Congress as PM visits Assam

February 19, 2011 12:24 IST

The anti-talks faction of the United Liberation Front of Asom on Saturday warned of 'armed protest' against the ruling Congress for 'engineering a division in the outfit under the guise of a peace process'.

Incidentally, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is on a one-day visit to the state.

A statement e-mailed to the local media by one Arunoday Dahotia on behalf of the ULFA faction led by commander-in-chief Paresh Barua, said that the ULFA would resort to 'armed protest' against the Congress for indulging in the 'politics of division'. The ruling party is trying to crush the ULFA and other mass agitations in the state without bothering to solve their problems, alleged the mail.

The Congress has been exploiting the sentiments of all ethnic groups in the state for the last 64 years, stated the e-mail.

The anti-talks faction of the ULFA has also instructed people to stay away from public meetings organised by Congress leaders and warned that the militant outfit should not be held responsible for the consequences if they failed to heed the warning.

The outfit further accused the Congress of 'politicising' the infamous episode of 'secret killings' (extrajudicial killings of family members of ULFA militants between 1997 and 2000, when the Asom Gana Parishad was in power) to come to power in the state. The party has done nothing to punish the culprits responsible for the secret killings, claimed the mail.

The ULFA faction also accused the Congress of plotting the exploitation of the state's water resources by setting up mega dams.
