June 28, 2007 01:16 IST

Tony Blair on Wednesday resigned as a member of parliament, hours after stepping down as British Prime Minister, the Treasury announced.

Blair, 54, formally handed in his resignation to Queen Elizabeth II earlier in the day, handing over power to his former finance minister Gordon Brown.

He has been named as special envoy of the diplomatic Quartet comprising the United States, Russia, European Union and the United Nations, which is pushing for peace in Middle East.
