A court in Birmingham is hearing the case of an Indian PhD student accused of killing his wife by bludgeoning her with a baseball bat. 34-year-old Anurag Johri, who had enrolled for a PhD in business process outsourcing at the University of Central England, is charged with killing his wife Deepti Anurag, 29, in November 2005.
Gareth Walters, prosecuting lawyer, told the Birmingham crown court: "This is the case of a man who could not accept his wife had left him and was becoming independent of him."
Walters said the day before the killing on November17, Johri bought a baseball bat from a sports shop. When he purchased it, he insisted it should be wrapped up in two plastic bags, one at either end, in order to disguise it. The court was told that Johri continually harassed his estranged wife where she worked at a Birmingham university before bludgeoning her to death in a "planned and premeditated" attack.
Johri had searched on Google on tips for killing before beating her on the head with a baseball bat at a room at the University of Central England, it was alleged at the court.
Johri of Wellhead Lane, Perry Barr, admitted the manslaughter of Deepti on November 17 last year, but denied murdering her.
