TRS will not merge with Congress: KCR

April 30, 2011 02:04 IST
Dismissing speculation that his party would be merged with Congress, Telangana Rashtra Samithi President K Chandrasekhara Rao on Friday said the party would retain its independence.

"Though I have repeatedly said TRS would not be merged with any other party, still a misinformation campaign is going on. I would like to make it clear once again that TRS would not be merged with any other party," he said at a conclave of party delegates on the occasion of its 10th anniversary.

The TRS will work for the twin objectives of formation of separate Telangana state and its reconstruction afterwards, he said.

The misinformation campaign was being carried out by the rivals as the party had emerged as a dominant force in Telangana with lakhs of people joining it, Rao claimed.

The reports about TRS's merger have been in circulation as Rao had earlier said he would be ready even to wash Congress President Sonia Gandhi's feet, if separate Telangana was formed. On another occasion he had said he would consult the people of Telangana if a merger proposal was placed before him.

Taking exception to some Congress leaders talking about the merger of TRS, Rao claimed that the ruling party would be "merged in the Bay of Bengal" if it failed to concede demand for Telangana. He demanded that the United Progressive Alliance government take immediate steps for formation of Telangana in deference to the 'democratic aspirations' of people.
