Eleven people, including seven women, were killed when a Mumbai-bound express train rammed into an auto-rickshaw at an unmanned railway crossing near Jamnagar on Thursday, according to the police.

The Saurashtra Janta Express hit the auto-rickshaw at approximately 2.15 pm near Jaliya station in Dhrol taluka of the district. All the deceased were passengers of the ill-fated auto, which broke down on the tracks, they said.

"Ten people died on the spot, while one succumbed to the injuries during treatment in the hospital," the police said, adding that the condition of the auto-rickshaw driver was stable, but he was in a state of trauma.

The deceased were all residents of Haripara village in Lodhika taluka of Rajkot district. They had come to Mansar near Jaliya for a condolence meeting, police said. However, rail traffic was not affected due to the accident, railway officials said.

Meanwhile, the state government announced a compensation of Rs 25,000 to family members of those killed in the accident. The compensation would be disbursed from the chief minister's relief fund.
