A top terrorist of the Lashkar-e-Taiba terror outfit was killed in a gunfight with security forces on the outskirts of Srinagar on Monday evening.

A senior police officer told Rediff.com that the special operations group of police and paramilitary troops surrounded Gasoo Mohalla near Hazratbal on Monday evening after receiving specific information about the presence of terrorists in a house.

"As the security forces launched searches in the area, the hiding terrorists opened fire triggering a gunfight in which a top militant of LeT, identified as Sajjad Ahmad, was killed," the police officer said.

He said Sajjad was active in the Valley for a long time.

"The operation is over. However, search operations are continuing in the area," he said.
