A top militant commander of frontline Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) outfit was killed in a fierce gunfight in the Gurura village of northern Kashmir Bandipore district Monday morning.

A senior police officer said security forces had surrounded Gurura village, 56 km from capital Srinagar, on Sunday morning following specific information that a top militant commander was hiding inside it.

"As the security forces challenged the militant to surrender, he opened fire
at the surrounding troops triggering an encounter at the end of which the LeT commander identified as Abu Zarar, a Pakistani national was killed," the officer said.

"No collateral damage to civilian property was caused during the gunfight. The operation was jointly carried out by army, central reserve police force (CRPF) and police."

He said one AK-47, four magazines, some grenades and a wireless set were recovered from the slain commander.
