The Tamil Nadu government has changed the names of 370 areas in consonance with their Tamil pronunciation. While in all 1018 names changes were recommended by a committee of district collectors, the consultation group accepted changes to 370 place names.
The 37-page order, issued on April 2, has become public only now.
Accordingly, some of the prominent place names have been changed as hereunder.
Tuticorin reverts to being Thoothukkudi.
VOC Nagar has become Va Oo Si Nagar.
Chintadripet has become Chintadrepettai.
Mylapore has become Mayilaapoor.
Saidapet has beome Saithapettai.
Guindy Park has become Gindi Poonga.
Ambattur has become Ambaththoor.
Sathanur has become Saathanoor.
Pudukottai has become Puthukkottai.
Some places have merely added a letter to their names.
Nandambakkam, for instance, has become Nandambaakkam. While Talaikkulam has become Thalaikkulam.
Most recommendations were turned down by the consultative committee, with the places retaining their popular names.
Thus Gingee (Senji in Tamil) remains Gingee. Srirangam (proposed to be named as Thiruvarangam) remains Srirangam.
