Three Indian Navy sailors have been arrested for allegedly molesting three girls and assaulting policemen when they intervened, police said on Monday.

According to the police, the incident occurred on Saturday night when the three girls along with two boys came out of the Regal theatre in South Mumbai after watching a movie.

The accused identified as Animesh Thakur (26), Bhagat Singh (26) and Gangadhar Kushawa (28) were in an inebriated condition and started making vulgar comments, police said.

The group of five initially ignored the Navy men and went to a nearby ATM to withdraw cash. The accused followed them and started groping them, leading to an altercation between the two boys and the three accused.

Hearing the commotion, a police patrolling van reached the spot but the accused assaulted the cops as well, police said.

The three Navy men were subsequently arrested on Saturday night and were remanded to police custody till today by a local court, police said adding the Navy has taken the custody of the accused to conduct an enquiry into the allegations.
