Three persons were killed and two others injured when pro-Taliban militants attacked several North Atlantic Treaty Organisation container trucks in the restive Khyber tribal region of Pakistan on Monday, officials said.
The militants attacked the trucks in Jamrud area near the border with Afghanistan. The rebels also set several trucks on fire. Three drivers were killed instantly while two persons were seriously injured, officials told the media.
Security forces engaged the militants and the two sides exchanged fire.
No group claimed responsibility for the attack. Several militant groups, including the Pakistani Taliban, are active in the region.
A key route used to transport supplies to the United States and foreign forces in Afghanistan passes through Khyber Agency.
In the past few years, the Taliban have destroyed hundreds of container trucks and oil tankers in attacks in northwest Pakistan.
