At least 30 people have lost their vision after they underwent cataract surgeries conducted by a charitable trust-run hospital at Mandla in Madhya Pradesh.
The surgeries were conducted during a period of seven days at various villages of the district by the Yogiraj Hospital and Research Centre under the aegis of the Swami Seetharamji Maharaj Hanuman Ghat Trust.
"The cataract operations were performed on a total of 313 people out of whom 30 lost their eye sight," Chief Trustee T S Mishra confirmed after the incident came to light when the victims complained about loss of their eye-sight at a public hearing held by the Mandla collector, a few days ago.
Mishra said that the operations were conducted by Dr Anil Parmar under the guidance of Padmashree awardee Dr Vikas Mahatme. As per official reports, 23 villagers from Bichchia tehsil were chosen for cataract surgeries at an eye camp held on September 10 at Mandla, where one lost his eye sight.
Similarly, on September 11, the surgery was performed on 36 people in village Jhiria and out of them 17 lost their vision. Another camp was held on September 15 at Ramnagar village where out of 16, three returned blind after the surgery.
A day after, one lost his eye-sight at Surajpura camp and another six lost their vision after 13 underwent the surgery at Dungaria village. The hospital has conducted 1,584 cataract surgeries between January 10 to October 15 this year.
