With the resignation of Nitish Kumar as Bihar’s chief minister, here’s a look at the numbers that matter and the possibility of a new political realignment in the state.

Mind you, the majority mark in assembly is 122.

In 2015, post the elections, these were the numbers:

MAHAGATHBANDHAN

Rashtriya Janata Dal: 80

Janata Dal-United: 71

Congress: 27

Total: 178/ 243

NATIONAL DEMOCRATIC ALLIANCE

Bharatiya Janata Party: 53

Lok Janshakti Party: 2

Rashtriya Lok Samta Party: 2

Hindustani Awam Morcha- Secular: 1

Total: 58

OTHERS

CPI (ML): 3

IND: 4

Total: 7

However, on Wednesday after Nitish Kumar quit as CM, and if he joins hands with the BJP, he would be able to stake power again as it would be his 71 seats along with the NDA’s 58 -- attaining the total number of 129.
