Terrorists blow up Anantnag-Baramulla rail track

April 02, 2010 08:40 IST

Terrorists blew up a portion of the Anantnag-Baramulla rail track near Galbugh in the south Kashmir Pulwama district late on Thursday night.

This is for the first time where terrorists in Kashmir have attacked Kashmir's railways -- the Anantnag-Baramulla rail track is the only rail link connecting the south and north of the Valley and was inaugurated by Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh in 2008.

A senior police officer said militants had used an improvised explosive device for the blast, which destroyed a portion of the track near Galbugh village.

"The rail traffic has been suspended and restoration work is on,' said the officer.

The Anantnag-Baramulla train, which starts its journey from Qazigund in Anantnag district and is used extensively by office-goers, students and businessmen, has been suspended till the repair is completed.

"The traffic on the track would be resumed soon," the officer said.

Authorities have made elaborate security arrangements along the south-north rail link, which is guarded by the railway police and the central reserve police force.
