Security forces on Monday gunned down a militant who targeted a Central Reserve Police Force camp on the Jammu-Srinagar national highway after a state road transport bus in which he was travelling was intercepted for checking at Kud.

Three civilians -- two women and a child -- were injured in the incident in Udhampur district, which falls in Jammu region of the state, police said. One of the women later succumbed to injuries in the hospital.

The State Road Transport Corporation bus was on its way from Kashmir Valley to Jammu when it was stopped for checking at Kud, about 170 km from Jammu.

“Police and the CRPF were frisking all the Jammu-bound vehicles at Kral Nallah area in Kud when they stopped an SRTC bus and during its checking, an unidentified suspected terrorist opened fire at them this evening,” Director General of Police K Rajendra Kumar said.

In the cross-fire, one terrorist was killed and one AK-47 rifle and one pistol were recovered from him. He said it seems only one terrorist was travelling in the bus.

He said while it seems that the attack was carried out by one terrorist, the security forces cordoned off the area and launched a combing operation to ensure that no other suspected militant was involved in the attack.

“The firing has stopped, the CRPF and police are on the spot and we are carrying a combing operation. Investigation is also on to ascertain the identity of the slain militant,” the state police chief said.

Inspector General of Police Jammu, Danesh Rana said that one terrorist has been eliminated even though the search operation is on. He also said that a civilian woman who was injured in the attack died in hospital.
