India has signed an international convention requiring States to make punishable as serious offence under their domestic law, terrorist acts involving use of nuclear material.
Indian Ambassador to the United Nations Nirupam Sen signed the documents at a brief formal ceremony at the UN Headquarters on Monday.
The International Convention for the Suppression of Acts of Nuclear Terrorism, initially proposed by the Russian Federation, was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on April 13, 2005 by a consensus and was opened for signature at the UN Headquarters from September 14, 2005.
The agreement requires States to make punishable as serious offence under their domestic law, terrorist acts involving the use of nuclear material. States are also required to cooperate in the prevention, investigation and prosecution of these offences through information sharing, extradition and mutual legal assistance.
