A special court on Wednesday sentenced prime accused Abdul Karim Telgi to 10 years imprisonment and 21 other associates to seven years in one of the cases relating to the multi-crore fake stamp paper scam.

Special court Judge Chandrashekar Patil imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on Telgi while pronouncing the quantum of sentence on the first case filed by Upparpet police in 2003 against Telgi and 32 others.

Convicts will serve an additional year in jail if they fail to pay the fine. The judge imposed Rs 10,000 fine on the 21 others convicted, failing which they would have to undergo six months imprisonment. The judge had acquitted 11 including Rehan Baig, brother of former minister and Congress leader Roshan Baig.

The case came to light when police arrested one of Telgi's associates, Baddrudin while transporting the fake stamp paper, subsequently leading to the unravelling of the scam. Telgi's advocate Shankarappa said he would appeal against the order in the High Court.

Telgi had earlier been convicted for similar offences in a case booked in the Peenya jurisdiction.
