Concerned over the lack of proper opportunities for teachers to update themselves with current developments in their subjects, the Delhi University has decided to set up an institute that will help brush up their expertise.
The Institute of Life Long Learning will work in collaboration with government agencies and other national and
international institutes.
"We plan to set up the institute, which will have a major responsibility to train teachers. The centre will soon develop
e-learning materials, delivery systems, courses, curricula and content for the programme," a member of Delhi University's Academic Council told PTI.
"The curriculum would include the latest topics available in the revised syllabus and also the topics related to the new
developments in the subject," the member said.
The ILLL will conduct need-based orientation and refresher courses for teachers by creating sub-centres in some
colleges, which will be equipped with state-of-the-art technology and advanced laboratories.
The Institute is planning to provide a month-long training to teachers across the country. "There are provisions for introducing a short on-line examination for the learners who can download their certificates themselves," he said.
A study conducted in 2002 has found that only 13 percent of college teachers across the country have been able to
upgrade their knowledge through refresher courses or orientation programmes conducted by various universities.
