Four people were arrested for allegedly damaging five taxis, owned by North Indians, in the early hours of Saturday in Mumbai, police said.

Efforts were on to ascertain whether the arrested belonged to Raj Thackeray-led Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), which had run an anti-north Indian campaign last month, they said.

"At around 2am, four motorcycle-borne men stopped three taxis in Worli area and asked the drivers where do they hail from. On Being told that they belonged to North India, they broke the window panesof the taxis," police said.

Later, they went towards Lower Parel and damaged two more taxis, police said, adding police patrol parties across the city were alerted and the four were arrested immediately.

The arrested have been identified as Ashish Parab, Pravin Pawaskar, Sameer More and Milesh Shelar.
