A day after hike in auto rickshaw fares, taxi fare was increased by Rs two in Mumbai on Wednesday.

A decision to this effect was taken at a meeting of Mumbai Metropolitan Regional Transport Authority in Mumbai on Wednesday.

Mumbai Taximen Union president A L Quadros, who was present in the meeting, told reporters that the base fare has been increased from the present Rs 14 to Rs 16.

"For every subsequent kilometre, the fare will increased from Rs nine to Rs 10," he said.

Quadros said the fares would come into effect from the midnight of June 27.

Replying to questions, Quadros said the union was not happy with the Re 1 hike in the subsequent kilometres.

"We will discuss this in our working committee meeting," he said.

Meanwhile, government officials said the MMRTA has approved the proposal to hike the basic fare of autorickshaws from Rs nine to Rs 11 and Rs 5 to Rs 6.5 for every subsequent kilometer.

The hike in auto and taxi fares have been effected following a one-day strike in Mumbai by 80,000 auto and taxi drivers on Monday.
