Janata Party chief Dr Subramanian Swamy slammed Team Anna on Thursday for 'insisting a new law to deal with corruption and bring the premier investigating agency under the Lokpal'. The government's Lokpal Bill is likely to be introduced in the Parliament on Thursday afternoon, which has already been opposed by Team Anna.
The government's Lokpal Bill has not kept the Central Bureau of Investigation completely under the Lokpal.
"There are enough laws which can deal with corruption. The CBI recently busted the 2G scam, one of the biggest scandals the country has seen. You cannot insist on a new law to do a job which the agency is already doing," Dr Swamy told mediapersons in the Parliament complex.
Statistics released by the CBI say that the agency since 2007 has registered 1,832 cases against government servants under anti-corruption law and 2,983 government officials were named in the FIRs and prosecuted. The biggest case relates of 2G spectrum scam, Swamy noted.
He, however, said that there is a need for giving 'full autonomy' to CBI to investigate cases of corruption and it should not be controlled either by the government or Lokpal.
"We have seen how CBI buckles under pressure when it is investigating cases against mighty and powerful as has happened in the case of (Home Minister) P Chidambaram where it refused to look into the allegations against him for which I have produced enough evidence before the court," Swami added.
