Even before the dust of the cry for a separate Telangana state could settle down, demands are being raised for two separate states to be carved out of Meghalaya.

Two regional political parties have agreed to jointly fight for creation of the two states for the Khasi-Pnar and Garo tribal communities.

A joint meeting of Garo National Council and Hill State People's Democratic Party held in Shillong on Thursday resolved to work for the creation of separate states for the two communities to ensure faster development.

The HSPDP is an ally of the ruling Congress-led

Meghalaya Democratic Alliance.

The resolution, jointly signed by GNC president Clifford Marak and HSPDP chief Hoping Stone Lyngdoh, said they were opposed to the idea of 'Greater Garoland' demanded by militant outfit Achik National Volunteers' Council as it will affect the relations between the two communities.

Talking to PTI later, Marak said three districts in the Garo Hills region should constitute the separate Garo state, while four in Khasi Janitia hills for the Khasi-Jaintia state.
