Srinagar LS bypoll: EC orders repoll in 38 polling stations

April 11, 2017 19:04 IST

The Election Commission on Tuesday ordered a repoll in 38 polling stations of the Srinagar Lok Sabha constituency which witnessed large-scale violence during the by-election on Sunday.

In a letter to the state chief electoral officer, the Commission said it is ordering repoll based on the reports of the returning officers and observers.

The repoll will be held on April 13.

Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah questioned the logic behind holding a repoll in 38 polling stations in Srinagar Lok Sabha constituency.

“Situation isn’t conducive for polls in Anantnag but it’s conducive for a re-poll in the areas worst affected by violence on the 9th. Logic?” Omar wrote on Twitter.

The Election Commission on Monday decided to postpone the bypoll in Anantnag Lok Sabha seat from April 12 to May 25, hours after an appeal by Peoples Democratic Party candidate for the seat and CM Mehbooba Mufti’s brother Tassaduq Hussain Mufti to this effect.
