Sonia, Rahul pay tribute to Rajiv Gandhi on his death anniversary

The programme included Morning Raga recital by Pt Ripesh Mishra and Pt Rajneesh Mishra.

It was followed by playing of an audio excerpt of a speech delivered by Rajiv Gandhi calling upon people for "building bridges, sinking differences and fighting for freedom" and talking about "awareness of younger generation."

After conclusion of the programme at Vir Bhumi, the Gandhi family reached Shakti Sthal, memorial of late Indira Gandhi, to pay their homage.

Rajiv Gandhi, who was the sixth and youngest PM of India, was assassinated on May 21, 1991 at Sriperumbudur in Tamil Nadu during a poll campaign.

The Narendra Modi government had has called for a “fitting” commemoration of the death anniversary of the former prime minister, which is also observed as anti-terrorism day.

“You are requested to organise appropriate programmes, including the pledge-taking ceremony, to observe the anti- terrorism day in a fitting manner,” Joint Secretary in the Union Home Ministry, Satpal Chouhan, wrote to the chief secretaries of all state governments and Union Territories as well as the secretaries of central ministries.

The ministry told the states that the objective behind observing the day was to wean youths away from terrorism and violence by highlighting the sufferings of the common people and showing how that is prejudicial to national interest.
