Bharatiya Janata Party President Rajnath Singh on Tuesday said the ruling United Progressive Alliance’s wrong policies, wrong methods, wrong implementation of those very methods and massive corruption were the reasons behind the current economic crisis that has engulfed the country.
Singh, who was in Pune to address BJP functionaries during a meeting of the state executive of the party, said, “The PM says the economic problems are due to the global situation and the BJP, as an opposition party, has worsened it. But the government is squarely to blame for the fiasco on the economic and fiscal fronts. The BJP has never thwarted any finance bill. I want to remind the government and Congress supporters that the responsibility of running the House sits on the ruling party. The opposition is just a watchdog and the prime minister cannot expect us to act as cheerleaders.”
Singh said that usually, exports rise when the rupee is devalued, but that has not happened despite the recent devaluation of the currency. He criticised the government, saying it was responsible for the fiscal situation going beyond control.

The whole country is passing through a severe crisis
Singh added, “The government is suffering from total policy paralysis. It appears to us that the entire government has gone into depression. The whole country is passing through a severe crisis and this is not limited to the economy alone. Internal and external security is also a major cause of concern. Even after Pakistan military personnel violated the ceasefire at Line of Control, the government did not register a strong or even a limited protest, even once.”
However, Singh parried a question about Asaram Bapu being arrested over charges of sexual assault, pointing out that the self-proclaimed godman was behind bars.
On asked why BJP Members of Parliament voted in favour of the Food Security Bill in Lok Sabha even though they spoke against it during the debate in the House, he said, “The BJP wanted the Public Distribution System to be strengthened, as has been done in Chhattisgarh, before the bill was presented. As you know, the bill was passed after many modifications.”
