PHOTOS: Chaos on roads after part of Mumbai flyover caves in

A part of the Dindoshi flyover on the Western Express highway in Mumbai caved in last Tuesday, causing massive traffic congestion, and inconveniencing commuters. Due to repair work, the flyover has been closed for public use from 5 am on Tuesday to 5 am on Wednesday.

Poor quality of concrete was blamed for the structural damage to the flyover.

The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation then decided to keep the flyover partially closed for repair work -- only light vehicles would be allowed on the side lanes -- heavier vehicles and two vehicles were asked to cross the junction from under the flyover.

The repair work was largely carried out at night, when there is less traffic, making it easy for the authorities to divert it. The incident has raised serious questions about the safety of motorists and the construction quality of the flyover, which was opened for public use on April 12, 1999.
