Army chief's final farewell to brave martyrs

Army chief General Bikram Singh was on Wednesday briefed about the security situation in the wake of the killing of five Indian jawans along the Line of Control in Poonch in Jammu and Kashmir.

Along with senior commanders of various formations, General Singh left for the Nagrota-based 16 Corps headquarters, where he was briefed by senior army officers led by General Officer Commanding -In-Charge Lieutenant General Sanjeev Chachra and GOC, 16 Corps, Lieutenant General D S Hooda.

He was also briefed about the attacks, incidents of firing and ceasefire violations which had occurred before Tuesday's attack, soon after his arrival from New Delhi on Wednesday morning.

General Singh laid wreaths on the coffins draped in tri-colour at the Technical Airport in Jammu.

In a provocative attack, a group of 20 heavily-armed men led by Pakistani troops entered 450 metres into the Indian territory in Poonch sector on Tuesday and ambushed a patrol, killing five Indian soldiers.

The five jawans martyred were 35-year-old Naik Prem Nath of Chappra (Bihar), 29-year-old Lance Naik Shambhu Saran of Bhojpur (Bihar), 27-year-old Sepoy Vijay Kumar Rai of Patna (Bihar), 23-year-old Sepoy Ragunandan of Chhapra (Bihar) and 36-year-old Naik Pundalik Mane of Kolhapur (Maharashtra).
