Delhi recorded the lowest minimum temperature in a decade for the month of December as mercury dipped to a chilling 2.4 degrees on Monday morning.
Monday’s minimum was five degrees below normal. The minimum temperature on Sunday was recorded at 4.5 degrees Celsius.
A thick blanket of fog accompanied by icy winds left people in the city shivering in the early hours.
The maximum temperature in the last 24 hours was recorded at 19.5 degree Celsius, which is a degree below normal.
"Today's minimum of 2.4 is the lowest in a decade in the month of December," an official at the Met office said.
The weatherman has predicted similar weather conditions for Tuesday with the morning fog giving way to a clear sky later in the day. The temperature is likely to be between three and 18 degree Celsius.

The minimum temperatures across Kashmir and Ladakh regions went into downward spiral as several places, including Srinagar, recorded the coldest night of the season, a MeT Department official said.
Srinagar registered a minimum temperature of minus 5.3 degrees Celsius on Sunday night, a drop of 1.6 degrees as compared to previous night's minus 3.7 degrees Celsius, the official said.
This was the coldest night of the season in Srinagar this winter, he said.
Kargil in Ladakh region was the coldest place on Sunday night as mercury dipped to the season's low of minus 18.9 degrees Celsius.
Leh also recorded the coldest night of the season so far as the minimum temperature dropped to minus 17.7 degrees Celsius as compared to minus 17.3 degrees Celsius the previous night.
Qazigund, the gateway town to the Kashmir Valley, recorded a low of minus 4.8 degrees Celsius as compared to Sunday night's low of 4.0 degrees Celsius.

The night temperature in Pahalgam hill resort, which serves as a base camp during the annual Amarnath yatra, settled at a low of minus 9.0 degrees Celsius as compared to the previous night's minus 7.8 degrees Celsius.
The famous ski resort of Gulmarg registered a low of minus 10.2 degrees Celsius, marginally down from minus 9.6 degrees Celsius the previous night.
The minimum in Kokernag, in south Kashmir, settled at minus 6.1 degrees Celsius, a drop of nearly one degree from the previous night's minus 5.2 degrees Celsius.
Kupwara, in north Kashmir, registered a low of minus 6.2 degrees Celsius, a drop of 2.5 degrees from minus 3.7 degrees Celsius.
The Kashmir Valley is currently going through 'Chillai-Kalan', considered as the harshest 40-day winter period, which began on December 21.

During this period, the Valley and Ladakh region experience intense cold conditions and the possibility of snowfall is maximum.
The MeT Department has said the weather will remain cold and dry over the next 24 hours and there is possibility of snowfall on December 31.
Freezing cold waves swept across Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh on Monday with most places registering the season's coldest night even as Adampur in Jalandhar district remained the coldest place in the plains at minus 2.4 degrees Celsius.
Adampur recorded the season's coldest night with the minimum temperature dropping six degrees below normal as there was no let up in the severe cold wave which had most places in the region under its grip for the past few days.

Narnaul and Hisar in Haryana reeled under sub-zero temperatures of minus 0.5 degree Celsius, seven notches below normal and minus 0.1 degree Celsius, also down seven degrees, the MeT office said.
Bhiwani also experienced the chill at 0.8 degree Celsius, the town's coldest night so far, while Ambala's low settled at 3.7 degree Celsius, down two degrees.
As mercury further fell on Monday across the region, Amritsar shivered at a low of 0.8 degree Celsius, two below normal, while Ludhiana residents experienced the bone-chilling low of 1 degree Celsius, down six degrees.
Patiala recorded a low of 2.3 deg C, down five degrees.
Chandigarh, the common capital of the two states, also witnessed a further fall in night temperatures recording a low of 3.4 degree Celsius, three below normal.
Cold wave conditions are likely to continue in the region over the next few days, a MeT official said.
