April 03, 2012 19:06 IST

Six people, including four policemen, were killed in southern Afghanistan by Taliban insurgents, who first poisoned their food and then launched an attack on their checkpoint.

The ambush occurred in Nahri Saraj district of the southern Helmand province last night where four policemen and two civilians were killed during a gunbattle and three other policemen went missing.

A statement from the governor's office said on Tuesday that the police at the check point was food-poisoned before the insurgents attacked their post. In the ensuing gun-battle between police and insurgents, two civilians, who were believed to be guests, were also killed, said the statement.

A delegation has been dispatched to the district to investigate how the insurgents were able to poison the police and then attack their check point.
