Former Bharatiya Janata Party MP from Amritsar Navjot Singh Sidhu on Thursday said his wife may contest the by-poll for the Amritsar Lok Sabha seat vacated by him after he was convicted in a road rage case.

The party high command would be taking a decision on the issue on January 15.

He had spoken with his wife and she seemed open to the idea, he said. "But, I have not had a serious discussion on the issue with her fully," he added.

"I am a soldier of the party and it is the prerogative of the generals (party high command) to allocate the seats," he said.

On media speculation that some Congressmen want Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to contest the Amritsar seat, he said, "I cannot say anything. It is for their party to decide."

He also declined comment on a media report suggesting that Manmohan Singh's younger brother Surjit Singh Kohli, a businessman based at Amritsar, is keen to contest the February 13 Punjab Assembly polls from Amritsar.
