The strike called by hardline separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani resulted in a shutdown and curfew-like situation in the old parts of Srinagar on Monday, marking the fourth day of protests since the death of a 17-year-old student.
The strike call evoked a near-total response in Srinaga,r where shops, businesses, educational institutions and traffic were shut.
The strike against the death of a Class XII student, Tufail Ahmad Mattoo, affected attendance in offices. Board exams that were to begin on Monday were rescheduled.
Skeletal private transport was seen plying in parts of the city.
Tufail died on June 11 after he was allegedly hit by a tear smoke shell in the Rajouri Kadal area.
The police, the paramilitary, the central reserve police force soldiers patrolled roads enforcing curfew-like-restrictions in the old city.
The police had to use tear smoke and baton charges to disperse mobs in certain parts on Monday.
