External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee is expected to visit Iran soon, said Manbir  Singh, India's ambassador to Iran.

Mukherjee's visit comes at a time when the region is passing through a diplomatic crisis. President George Bush's sharply criticised Iran recently during his tour of West Asia and Gulf.

Manbir Singh was speaking in a FICCI seminar in New Delhi in honour of Iran's finance minister Danesh Jafri, who is in India to promote bilateral trade relations.

He also said that in December 2007, foreign secretary S S Menon had visited Iran and bilateral visits are on the rise. He said that India is interested in promoting bilateral trade and is also looking forward to the Iran-Pakistan-India pipeline.

Singh said, "Iran holds out major opportunities for the US and India needs more energy and gas to sustain its nine per cent growth."
