Shiv Sena leader Madhukar Sarpotdar (75) passed away on Saturday afternoon at the Hinduja Hospital in Mumbai.

Sarpotdar was rushed to Hinduja Hospital on February 17 after he complained of pain in his chest. He was being monitored at the intensive coronary care unit.

In 2008, Sarpotdar was convicted by magistrate court in Mumbai for inciting religious sentiments during the 1992-93 riots.

Sarpotdar was granted bail as the one-year imprisonment is being challenged with an appeal in the sessions court. Sarpotdar was twice elected as Member of Parliament, once as Member of Legislative Assembly and later as Member of Legislative Council.

In 2005 Sarpotdar had unsuccessfully contested against Congress candidate Priya Dutt from Mumbai North-West parliamentary constituency.

His son Atul is an office bearer of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena. Sarpotdar's funeral will start from his Bandra residence on Sunday at 10 am.
