People's Union for Civil Liberties and Jana Hastakshep condemned the arrest of Dr Biyanak Sen, senior activist of PUCL by the Chhattisgarh government and slamming of the charges of waging war against the state and sedition.

The two organisation passed a resolution condemning the arrest and slammed the government of India and state governments for organizing fake encounters to liquidate activists and later dubbing them as terrorists.

"The fact is that Dr Sen was very active in bringing to light the strocities being committed by the state sponsored vigilant group called Salwa Judum and was meant to send a strong signal of terror from the Chhattisharh state that it will brook no dissent," a press hand out distributed to the media persons noted.

Some of the civil liberties activists went to the extreme end of even lashing out at the Supreme Court of India who in their opinion would not allow cases of fake encounters to be taken up barring the case of Shorabuddin. " The courts are reluctant to bring the guilty to book because about

peace in the valley and any proactive measures bringing about accountability particularly to the Human Rights situation has been absolutely pathetic," the press handout said.

Amongst those who addressed the meeting included noted Supreme court advocate Nandita Haksar and journalist Manoj Mitta who has been highlighting the atrocities against those killed in fake encounters. " Though hundreds have been killed in fake encounters in the state of Jammu and Kashmir only handful of cases have been registered against the culprits.

According to Nandia Haksar in a unique case the Indian intelligence agencies killed eight Burmese fighters after they were invited for a meeting in Andemans. The matter is currently pending before the apex court.

They demanded that killings of innocent people, political leaders and human right activists in fake encounters should be brought to an end with immediate effect. Repeal all such draconian laws which give unlimited powers to the police and armed forces. Release Dr Sen and all other civil liberities activists.
