Security beefed up at US consulate in Mumbai

September 13, 2012 18:31 IST

With United States diplomatic missions being attacked in some countries over a film that shows the Prophet Mohammed in poor light, security has been stepped up at American establishments in the city, the police said on Thursday.

"We have already provided enough security at the US consulate in Bandra-Kurla Complex. But after the Libya attack, security has been increased further at the consulate and other US establishments," said a top police officer who did not wish to be named.

He said though there was no specific alert about any threat to the consulate and other US offices, security was beefed up as a precautionary measure.

An attack on the American consulate in the eastern Libyan city of Benghazi had claimed the lives of Ambassador J Christopher Stevens and three other diplomats.

A mob armed with guns and rockets had stormed the consulate to protest a film that was perceived as being offensive to Islam and the Prophet. Protests were also witnessed at US diplomatic missions in Egypt and Yemen.
