The Supreme Court on Monday declined to stay the trial in disproportionate assets case involving Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J jayalalithaa and her aide Sasikala.
A special court at Bangaluru is hearing the case on a day-to-day basis.
Jayalalithaa and others are accused of amassing wealth disproportionate to their income during the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam chief's tenure as chief minister in 1991-96.
Sasikala had approached the Supreme Court after the trial court and Karnataka high court refused to give certain documents pertaining to the case to her
Sasikala's lawyer told the court she had already answered 599 questions by the prosecution and 1000 more are expected. He said that to answer these questions, the documents which are part of the case are needed. He wanted the trial to be stayed till those documents are given to Sasikala.
The Apex court bench, in reponse, asked the lawyer to point out few questions which Sasikala could not answer for want of these documents. The lawyer then sought time to give the details.
However, SC declined to stay the trial and said, "We can't give any interim relief and the trial will continue."
