One body spotted, fate of other miners not known

June 19, 2005 18:13 IST

A body was found floating in the flooded Saunda colliery in Hazaribagh and efforts were on to bring it overground, a top police official said.

Fourteen miners were trapped inside Central Coalfields Ltd's Saunda colliery in Hazaribagh, Jharkhand on Wednesday after the mine's roof collapsed and gallons of water gushed in flooding the colliery.

Additional Superintendent of Police Upendra Kumar said the rescue team spotted the body, and its identity could be known only after it was fished out.

The rescuers have been trying to reach the other miners trapped inside the mine since Wednesday.

Though the water level is receding, it could take another week to completely drain out the mine, Kumar said.
