CBI's Additional Director K Saleem Ali was promoted as posted as the special director of the agency.

The name of Ali, a 1978-batch IPS officer from Manipur-Tripura cadre, was cleared by Appointments Committee of Cabinet headed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, officials said.

Ali had moved in as Additional Director last September from Tripura where he was posted as director general of police.

With an earlier experience of working with several departments of the agency for nearly 14 years in two stints -- 1998-99 and 2006-09, Ali is the supervising officer of alleged scams in National Rural Health Mission.

He looks after special crimes and special task force of the CBI besides various states.

The CBI will now have two special directors, the other being V K Gupta, a 1977 batch IPS officer from Gujarat.

Ali has also held various positions in Tripura - SP of North Tripura, South Tripura and West Tripura and in Special Branch. He has served as IGP (Armed Police, Operations and Law and Order), the official said.

Ali has also served as inspector general of Indo-Tibetan Border Police during which he was awarded gold, silver and bronze discs.

He has been decorated with the police medal for meritorious service and the President's police medal for distinguished service.
