Three persons of Indian origin were brutally killed in separate robbery attempts on the suburbs of the city, triggering panic among the community in South Africa.

Jessie Valayadam (46) was shot dead by thieves Sunday and his body was found lying inside his car in the suburb of Chatsworth, police spokesperson Daniela Veldhuizen said.

She said the man received two gunshots on his head and his cellphones and other personal belongings were missing.

In another incident, 53-year-old Daddy Naidoo was brutally attacked by two men who forced their way into his house at Isipingo, a southern suburb.

His throat was slit and the attackers ran away with a television set, video recorders and other items.

In the third attack, which also occured in Isipingo, a 40-year-old Indian-origin

man was hijacked along with his car by three people, police said, without revealing his name.

His body was found in the neighbouring area of Umlazi two days later. "It appears the hijackers took him into the township, killed him and threw his body into the bushes. His car is still missing," the police official said.

The latest incidents have sent shockwaves across the community and residents say they are living in fear.

"For a while we thought the police were winning the war against violent crime, but it seems the thugs are coming out of the woodwork and once again targeting the vulnerable communities", said Poobalan Govender, a resident of Isipingo.

"We are in a state of siege... It's worrying that we have to live under such conditions," he said.
