Controversial Indian origin author Salman Rushdie has said that his experience of living with fundamentalism has relevance for all people now.

"We're all living under a fatwa. You just have to get on," Rushdie, who was condemned to death in an edict issued by former Iranian spiritual leader Ayatollah Khomeini in 1989 after publishing his novel Satanic Verses, said in an interview to The Daily Telegraph. Rushdie said "now we are all" living under a fundamentalist threat, which was once a solo occupation for him.

"And I think we are all in the end making the same choice that I made all those years ago, which was you just have to get on with your life. You know, in the end, that is all you can do," said the Mumbai-born author, who won the Booker Prize for his Midnight's Children.

In the wide-ranging interview, Rushdie, currently working on a new novel that connects Renaissance Florence with 16th century India, said he would like to have a child but his 32-year-old fourth wife Padma Lakshmi would like to wait.

"Oh, yes, Padma wants children, but she does not want them now because she is absurdly busy. She is a woman for whom work is very important and has great aspirations in all kinds of things. So she is the one who says she is not ready," said the 59-year old writer.

"I don't mind. Any time for me. I love my children and the idea of having another one is not a problem."

Rushdie has two sons from his previous marriages.
