Condemning the "heinous" attack on a government building in Chechnya, India on Saturday said this was yet another reminder to the international community that it must step up efforts to end terrorism wherever it exists.

"We express full support and solidarity with the Russian government in its efforts directed towards eradicating terrorism, protecting its territorial integrity and establishing constitutional order in Chechnya," an external affairs ministry spokesman said.

"We strongly condemn the heinous terrorist attack yesterday [Friday]

against the main government complex in Grozny, which has resulted in a large number of casualties. Such acts of terrorism are completely unacceptable," he said while conveying the Indian government's condolences to the members of the bereaved families.

At least 46 people were killed and 76 injured when suicide bombers rammed two dynamite-packed vehicles into the headquarters of the pro-Russian government in Grozny.

In Moscow, President Vladimir Putin said, "Those who prepared and performed this inhuman terrorist act are making war on their own people. But no amount of base crimes can break the Chechens' will and desire for a peaceful life."
