Karan Singh, Dwivedi take oath as RS members

Vice President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, in his capacity as the Chairman of Rajya Sabha, on Saturday administered the oath of office and secrecy to Dr Janardan Dwivedi and Dr Karan Singh as the newly elected members of the Rajya Sabha.

In a brief ceremony held at the Chairman's chamber in Parliament House, both members took oath in Hindi. The two parliamentarians were re-elected to the Upper House from the National Capital Territory of Delhi recently.

Karan Singh, who is the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha Ethics Committee that is probing the sting operation 'Chakravyooh' relating to the misuse oMPLAD funds, was administered the oath of office,

which enables him to continue as a member of the Upper House to chair the meetings of the Committee. His previous term ended on Saturday.

Singh was the member of the Fouth, Fifth, Sixth and Seventh Lok Sabha and was elected to the Rajya Sabha in 1996 and 2000. Among the Cabinet portfolios he held at the Centre, were Tourism and Civil Aviation, Health and Family Planning and Education and Culture. He has also been ambassador to the United States with Cabinet status.

Dwivedi, who was a reader in Delhi University, was first elected to the Rajya Sabha in August 2004. He has been member of the Defence Committee and Consultative Committee of the Civil Aviation.
