K Rahman Khan was on Thursday unanimously elected as the deputy chairman of the Rajya Sabha.
Decks were cleared for Khan to take over as deputy chairman after Shiv Sena Member Eknath Thakur withdrew from the race.
Khan's name was proposed by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad along with 12 others, including Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, after the Leader of Opposition Jaswant Singh and Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Nirupam announced Thakur's withdrawal.
Khan, who was a minister of state for chemicals and fertilisers in the Manmohan Singh government, will replace Najma Heptulla.
Heptulla recently quit Congress to join the Bharatiya Janata Party.
