Rs 5L award for info on Mumbai memorial desecration: MP

August 21, 2012 19:04 IST
An independent MP on Tuesday announced a reward of Rs 5 lakh to anyone providing credible information to police about the vandals who desecrated the Amar Jawan Memorial in Mumbai.

"I announce a reward of Rs 5 lakh to anyone who will provide the Mumbai police with credible information leading to the arrest of those involved in the desecration of the Amar Jawan Jyoti memorial in Mumbai," MP Rajeev Chandrasekhar said in New Delhi.

The memorial was targeted during violence in Mumbai's Azad Maidan on August 11.

Maintaining that the people who vandalised the memorial do not belong to any faith or religion, Chandrasekhar said, "The perpetrators must be apprehended at the earliest and brought to justice."

The memorial was erected to honour Sepoy Sayyed Hussein and Sepoy Mangal Gadiya, who were martyred during the mutiny of 1857 against British rule.

"These vandals have disgraced hundreds and thousands of people from all faiths and parts of India and those within and outside of armed forces who have served and protected the nation in time of war and in time of peace," the MP said.
