The Foundation for Democratic Reforms and Lok Satta, along with some organisations will arrange a round table conference in New Delhi on April 24. The conference is for a consensus on the creation of a powerful and independent Lokpal at the national level and Lokayuktas in states.
Other organisations associated with them are Transparency International and Centre for Media Studies.
The invitees include Justice Santosh Hegde, former Supreme Court judge and Lokayukta, Soli Sorabjee, former attorney general of India, Ram Jethmalani, former law minister, Shanti Bhushan, former union law minister, BB Tandon and JM Lyndgdoh, both former chief election commissioners and other eminent personalities.
The conference aims at building consensus and answering specific questions relating to the proposed Lokpal institution and other reforms needed to combat corruption effectively so that no one goes to bed on an empty stomach.
The conference aims to bring clarity and consensus on many contentious issues and promote inputs for informed public discourse. The deliberations of the conference will facilitate considered decision-making by the drafting committee constituted by the government, the political parties, and Parliament.
