October 16, 2014 22:50 IST

A senior Delhi Police official posted with the elite Special Cell was severely assaulted on Thursday allegedly by three persons including a woman and a juvenile in a case of road-rage in South Delhi's posh Lodhi Estate area.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Amit Singh suffered a fracture in his nose and received head injuries in the attack when he tried to intervene in a fight between his driver and another motorist whose car had hit Singh's official vehicle.

The ACP, who was in plain clothes, was bleeding profusely and was rushed to AIIMS Trauma Centre where he is undergoing treatment.

Police said the car, which was driven by a juvenile had hit Singh's car around 4.30 pm near Lodhi crematorium following which his driver had a verbal altercation with the minor.

Amid the verbal duel, a man and a woman on a bike arrived at the spot and started hitting the driver. When Singh tried to intervene, the man hit him on his head with the helmet from behind first and then punched him on his face several times, police said.

They said the biker was wearing "metallic punch" and had hit Singh hard on his face while the woman and the juvenile also rained blows on him.

"It is a case of road rage. The incident took place when our ACP was on his way to his office in Lodhi colony in an unmarked car without a beacon. He only had his driver with him. Singh was in plain clothes. He is out of danger. But, he will remain under observation," Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) Rajiv Ranjan told PTI.

All the three attackers were detained and taken to Hazrat Nizamuddin Police station.

This is the third incident where policemen have been attacked in the city in the last one week.

On Monday, a constable was gunned down in Vijay Vihar area of Outer Delhi. In another incident on Saturday, three alleged criminals had opened fire on two Delhi Police constables in busy Connaught Place area.
