Of all the land occupied by households across India, 2 per cent is neither leased nor owned.
The map (above) -- based on the data provided in the 66th round of the National Sample Survey --
shows the districts of India with their encroachment levels.
While as many as 149 districts surveyed reported almost no land encroachment, a few districts had very high encroachment levels. These include Mamit, Mizoram (46 per cent) and Dibang Valley, Arunanchal Pradesh (35 per cent) and South Andaman in Andaman and Nicobar Islands (32 per cent).
