More test positive for Lepto in Pune

One person died due to suspected Leptospirosis and eight others tested positive for the water-borne disease in Pune.

The Leptospirosis Referral Centre confirmed 72 cases as positive, including 59 in Mumbai region, out of the over 160 samples it received since the heavy rains and floods on July 26.

Suffering from high fever and respiratory problems, Tushar Mahamuni, 25 died on Wednesday in a private hospital, Chief Medical Officer of Pune Municipal Corporation Dr Pramod Dhaygude said. He added that it was death due to suspected Leptospirosis.

Though Mahamuni's urine sample had tested positive for leptospirosis, the same test could not be performed on the victim's blood sample, which was never sent for testing by the local authorities, officials at the Maharashtra-level Leptospirosis Referral Centre at B J Medical College said.

37 deaths in 48 hours in Mumbai


While four patients have recovered and were discharged, four others are still undergoing treatment in the city at Sassoon General Hospital (two cases), KEM Hospital (one) and Ruby Hospital (one), Dhaygude told PTI.

Meanwhile, Dr D D Shetty of Sassoon General Hospital said that since August 11, only eight of the 34 blood samples sent to the Referral Centre for Leptospirosis from Pune city had tested positive.

Death toll mounts to 142 in Mumbai, Thane

Seven samples included in 34 sent on Wednesday have tested negative, he said. Five of the seven blood samples received from the victims of flood-hit areas of Kolhapur have tested positive, Shetty added.

About samples from Mumbai region, he said that of the 120 blood samples received, only 59 have tested positive. This includes 28 (positive) of the total 47 samples sent on Wednesday by LTM Medical College, Sion, Shetty added.
