The Konkan Railway authorities revised the death toll to 51 in the Karwar-Mumbai holiday special derailment, which derailed between Vaibhavwadi and Rajapur stations on Sunday night.

Railway sources said in a release that 50 persons were killed and 25 injured in the mishap and the figure was wrongly quoted as 51 as one body was counted twice in inter-hospital transfers.

Thirty-six bodies have been brought to Goa Medical College in view of space constraints at Oras and Kankavli hospitals in Sidhudurg district of Maharashtra.

Dr Rajan V S Kuncolienkar (medical superintendent) of GMC said that out of 36 bodies, 20 have been identified and 14 handed over to the relatives. Sixteen bodies are at the mortuary for future identification.

The condition of 25 of the 26 patients admitted at GMC was improving, he said, adding that a resident of Sawantwadi identified as Shalak Naik, was in a serious condition.

Meanwhile, rail traffic was also restored on the route on Wednesday after the suspension of services for over two and a half days.

The KokanKanya Express left Margao for Mumbai at 1800 IST, KRC Public Relation Officer, Baban Ghatge told PTI, adding that other trains would follow as per schedule.
